Last night I was eating dinner with a group of friends. I mentioned that I would love to own a boat. A good friend’s husband told me that he knew where we could get one for free. Apparently a friend of his has a boat he loves that he can’t use anymore for various reasons. He is willing to give the boat away to someone he deems worthy. I could be worthy!

Or maybe not.

The more that we talked about getting a boat, the more I realized that I don’t know as much as I need to know to own a boat. My friend’s husband said that the big catch is that I would need to maintain the boat. As soon as he started talking about the powerhead and the stern drive and who knows what else I realized that I would need to learn a lot about boat maintenance to be able to accept this free gift.

I don’t have the time to learn what I need to in order to own a boat right now. Eventually I’ll take some classes and maybe I’ll buy a boat one day. For now, I have to turn down the offer of a free boat. It’s a tough thing to do but it’s the right thing to do in this case.
