3 Athletes Accused of Steroid Use

tiger_woods_buffThere seems to be a big push right now to find athletes that are using steroids. Three professional athletes have been publicly accused of steroid use just in the past week or two. Those athletes were:

  1. Tiger Woods. This guy is just ripe for any kind of scandal right now so it’s not even that surprising that people are spreading rumors that he might have been using some kind of steroids or hgh supplements.
  2. Manny Pacquiao. This Filipino professional boxer is facing accusations from his competitors that he has been using performance enhancing drugs such as steroids.
  3. Chris Simms. This quarterback for the Broncos is under investigation for the illegal use of steroids or related drugs. He had seen the same doctor as Woods did which is one reason they are both under investigation.

It should be noted that all of these reports throw together the possibility that the athletes are either using hgh or using steroids. However, these two things are not the same thing and shouldn’t be lumped together. (For one thing, hgh side effects are considerably lower.) This hints at the fact that the people accusing these athletes of steroid use are covering their bases and really don’t know what (if anything) the athletes have taken at all.

Boring Lectures Still Teach You Something

boring_lectureI recently went to a lecture that I wanted to leave even before it began. There was something about the speaker’s monotone voice and the stuffy setting of the room that made me certain in advance that I wasn’t going to be interested by this talk. Nevertheless, I stuck around.

I won’t pretend that the talk didn’t bore me. That monotone voice never improved. I was restless throughout much of the lecture. The topic was green building which is something that interests me but the way that the topic was approached by this particular speaker just couldn’t keep my attention. Throughout the event, I kept looking at the clock on my cell phone and wondering how rude it would be to spend the hour texting people.

However, after I left the lecture, I discovered that I had learned a little bit. I met a friend for lunch and was telling her how boring the talk had been. Then I found myself saying that at least I had learned something interesting about green lighting. Suddenly I found myself discussing the pros and cons of high pressure sodium light bulbs and giving my friend some information about what a metal halide ballast is. I didn’t know that until I went to the talk. This just goes to show that you can learn something from anything even if you aren’t really trying too hard.

Learning Photography

About a year ago, my brother-in-law — who is an amateur photographer – gave my husband and I his old professional-grade DSLR camera.  Since then, I’ve been learning how to use the manual settings.  Trust me, it’s harder than it looks.

In fact, for certain things I have found it is better just to go back to my little point and shoot digital camera.  Learning to use the DSLR has given me added sophistication with the point and shoot, though, and I now know how to manipulate the settings a bit better in order to get higher quality photographs.

DSLRs definitely have their advantages, though.  This article gives a good rundown of the top reasons why you should buy a DSLR camera.  Interestingly, one of his biggest pros is one of my biggest cons: the size.  I much prefer the small point and shoots, whereas he prefers the large handgrips on the DSLRs.  I also prefer small camera cases that I can shove in my purse, whereas DSLR camera bags tend to be larger and have pockets for extra lenses, flashes, memory cards, etc.

Which type of camera you prefer is really up to you.  But me personally, I would recommend that if you are really into photography, you at least learn to shoot on a variey of camera.  It will enhance your skill in the long run, even if you decide to go back to the quick and easy.

UGC is More Than Just Hamsters on a Piano

During the discussions that PK has been involved with around the National Broadband Plan, video has been a reoccurring theme. Everyone seems to agree that the next big thing to drive broadband (adoption, speeds, capacity, whatever) is the delivery of video over the internet. Someone will point to Netflix streaming, to Hulu, to Amazon, to Boxee, to YouTube, and say that they are merely the tip of the iceberg. Soon everyone will be sending and streaming video all over the internet, which is why we need more capacity.

In every one of these conversations, no matter what the context, there is always a point where people start to discuss what the video actually will be.
