For a number of years, my family has run a photo shop in town.  Back in the days of film based photography, the company did very well as they were the only film developer in town.  They made a good name for themselves, and over the course of many years their business flourished.

Things changed when digital photography became popular.  People no longer wanted to take their pictures in to get printed and they lost a number of clients thanks to photo printers.  For awhile there, they were considering closing shop, but thankfully my sister came up with a great idea: they should carry photo gifts.

Today my husband spent the day helping his brother move.  Since I had other things to do — a full day of work, fixing my car, and babysitting — I had a good excuse not to help, but Michael felt obligated to go even if I couldn’t.

I was really worried that he would come home in pain.  He really shouldn’t overexert himself too much — a few years ago he had a herniated disk in his back, and had to have surgery to fix the problem.  If he messes his back up again, he might be able to find back pain relief via physical therapy and noninvasive treatments such as drugs, or from alternative treatments such as using magnetic therapy for pain.  However, most likely if he hurts his back that bad again it’ll be beyond any form of natural pain relief, and he’ll just need to have another surgery to fix the problem.

Luckily, he came home with his back in okay condition — his brother had hired movers for the really heavy stuff, so most of what Michael was moving was a bunch of boxes.  However, he also wasn’t feeling well, which may have had a hand in keeping him from overexerting himself — he is apparently getting a cold!

Michael is in bed now, all doped up on cold medicine.  I ought to feel more sympathetic about his cold, but mainly I’m just glad he didn’t hurt his back!

The other day my little sister (not so little, I suppose, she’s twenty six) and I went home for the day, and she starts yakking about how men never talk about things and Dad’s an emotional cripple and I’m stupid and she should expect more from her family.  Mom, of course, patted her on the back and agreed, but seriously, I don’t get her.  I suppose the problem really is that she doesn’t get it, not that I don’t get her.  Men like to express themselves instead of communicating. 

Dad and I like to grill, and fish, and feel like we’re part of the natural cycle of life and food chains and all that.  We don’t need to talk about our emotions in front of a gas grill island.  We don’t need to see a deeper meaning in using the outdoor kitchen supplies.  It’s not like I can wash my hands in the outdoor sink next to the grill and feel ‘emotionally cleansed’ or whatever she goes on about.  When you can make something with your own two hands, like dinner for your family, then for a moment, all is right with the world.  It’s that simple.  We don’t need to talk about everything like we’re on Oprah.
