Supplemental Health Insurance for Medicare

Many people find that Medicare, our nation’s health insurance for people over 65, just isn’t enough. I’ve heard my parents talk about needing to get supplemental insurance to help cover what Medicare does not. The benefits are just not enough to cover what a retired or elderly person needs to have covered.
For instance, my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer in January of 2008. He had surgery two months later, and so far seems to be completely cured. However, there is the concern that the cancer could return after he goes onto Medicare — so he is planning on buying supplemental insurance to be sure that if it does, he will be covered adequately.
Medical insurance in Florida often offers plans that provide supplemental insurance to people on Medicare. These plans can help you cover what Medicare typically does not. Medicare clearly has a lot of failings, because pretty much everyone I know who can afford to buy supplemental insurance does. The problem I see with Medicare not doing enough to cover elderly people’s health costs, is that we’re talking about a demographic that tends to have more health problems than everyone else. Shouldn’t their health care by all rights then cover more, not less? The inadequacy of Medicare is, to me, just another sign of how badly we need health care reform in this country!
