My grandfather used to drink heavily.  He’s been clean for many years, but sometimes he’ll talk about how it was a long time ago.  I don’t think there were any alcohol treatment centers in Florida for people back then; nowadays you have a choice of places to go to for Florida alcohol treatment, but he did it cold turkey, and it took him several tries before he stopped drinking.  He says he’s just thankful my grandmother died before the worst times.

Once he caught me sneaking a beer out of the fridge when I was still underage.  He got so angry, I was scared.  That’s when he first told me about his own drinking and how it got him fired from several jobs.  He was even homeless at one point.  I was astonished; I never knew that.  He said he never wanted to see me get to that point, even if there are places like Florida drug treatment centers or alcohol treatment centers. 

My grandfather has always been my role model.  I wanted him to be proud of me, so I stayed out of trouble.  I just got my bachelor’s degree.  And I’ve discovered I don’t much like the taste of alcohol anyway.
