Childproofing (and Petproofing) Candles

I love burning candles. But many years ago I had an experience that really scared me: My cat put his tail too near an open flame, and set it on fire. Luckily I was right next to him and was able to put his tail out before he was hurt — or anything else caught fire.
The thought of what could have happened, had I not been standing right there, terrifies me. Would I have been able to save my cat? Would he have run and tried to hide, setting my apartment on fire?
This demonstrates how important it is to childproof — and petproof — any candles that you have burning. Here are a few tips for protecting your kids and pets for getting burned.
- Keep your candles up high, where little hands — or paws — can’t reach them. With cats this takes a little bit more thought, because you have to put the candles somewhere they can’t or won’t jump.
- Consider using jar candles or candle holders that shelter the flame. Jar candles that are burned partway down surround the flame, preventing your kids or pets from getting too close. Some candle holders surround the flame in a similar fashion. Don’t forget, though, that the glass can still get hot and burn inquisitive fingers!
- Never burn candles unattended. Yes, I know, it always says this on the packaging when you buy scented candles – but it’s important, so it’s worth repeating. Always be sure you are nearby so that you can react quickly if a candle gets knocked over or lights something (or someone) on fire!
With a little common sense and a few precautions, you can easily keep your children and animals safe while you burn candles in the house!
