Books to Read When a Loved One is in Drug Rehab

Having a loved one in drug rehab is a difficult experience. In order to better understand what the individual is going through, as well as to understand your own emotions, it may help to immerse yourself in information relevant to the experience.

Here are five books to put on your reading list if you’re in this situation:

  1. Hooked by Lonny Shavelson. This book looks closely at the difficulties of navigating the world of drug rehab and will help you feel like you’re not alone in your frustrations. It’s particularly good for people who have a loved one with a dual diagnosis.
  2. Come Back by Claire Fontaine. If you’re a mother with a child who has a cocaine addiction, you’ll be able to relate to this one.
  3. More, Now, Again by Elizabeth Wurtzel. This best-selling author is honest and articulate in her description about drug addiction.
  4. Gone to the Crazies by Alison Weaver. For those people who "have it all" and have an addiction anyway.
  5. The Los Angeles Diaries by James Brown. This shows how a distraught childhood can lead straight to drug rehab.

In addition to reading books, you should consider working with a drug addiction counselor who is skilled in therapy for people who have loved ones with addictions.
