The Boston Terrier Used to be a Bull Terrier

The dog that we know today as a Boston Terrier was not always called a Boston Terrier. There was a time when it was actually known as a Bull Terrier (or Bulldog Terrier). That name caused a lot of controversy at the time which is why it ended up being changed to the Boston Terrier.
You see, in the late nineteenth century there was a group of people in Boston who owned these dogs. They would breed them and show them in dog shows. Well, dog shows can get kind of finicky. People didn’t like the name of these dogs because they didn’t feel like the dogs fell squarely into either the category of “bull dog” or the category of “terrier”. There was a lot of dispute about it. Eventually the dog was re-named the Boston Terrier because it was more of a terrier than a bulldog.
The Boston Terrier has been widely known by that name ever since. Of course, people all over the world now own these dogs but the Boston moniker has stuck over time. It’s certainly better than another name that these dogs used to be called by. They were once called Round Heads because of the way the shape of their head differed from the other similar breeds!

That’s so interesting! I just love the history of little things like that. They only give you that just once in awhile on the televised dog shows.

How funny–I think they look a heck of a lot more like a bull dog than a terrier. Boxers look like bulldogs, too. What’s the history of that name?

How do they behave? Little terriers have such a reputation for being stubborn and short-tempered. And how does that compare to the bulldog?
