Swimming Used to be Taught in Miami Schools

Did you know that swimming is a class that used to be offered in schools throughout Miami? In fact, there was a time when almost every junior high school in the area had a swimming pool. Swimming lessons were part of the requirement to complete a gym class credit at those schools. That’s not the case anymore. Today if you want your kids to learn how to swim then you have to sign them up for swimming classes in Miami or at least swimming lessons in Miami parks and rec programs. They aren’t going to get that kind of education in a public school classroom.
There are some good reasons why most Miami schools no longer have swimming pools or offer swimming lessons as a part of the curriculum. For one thing, swimming pools can be really dangerous and gym teachers aren’t necessarily trained to deal with the emergencies that can come up around pools. For another thing, there are now concerns about co-ed gym classes having classes that require swimsuits because of issues around child development and body image. Along with that, many parents don’t want gym teachers touching their children as closely as is required during basic swimming lessons. Yep, these days we’re all better off if kids get private swimming lessons.
