Creative Businesses You Can Do From Home

There are a number of creative businesses that you can do from home part-time — or even full-time if you are good at what you do. Here are a few suggestions.
- Freelance writing. You didn’t think I’d write about creative home businesses without naming this one first, did you? Freelance writing isn’t necessarily journalism or fiction writing, like most people assume. Often it entails writing things like marketing copy to a client’s specifications.
- Jewelry making. I have a friend who makes beaded necklaces, lanyards, and bracelets, and sells them on Etsy. This is a great side business for someone who enjoys a lot of creative freedom, but be sure to make your jewelry different — there is so much jewelry out there that all looks the same, and therefore will be difficult to sell.
- Art framing. Creative framing is another good way to make money from home, either on the side or full time. This might involve matting and framing artwork for customers, or even choosing university diploma frames for customers who need a lot of hand-holding.
- Painting. Thinking of being a painter brings to mind the stereotype of the starving artist for most people. However, it doesn’t have to be like that. A neighbor of ours started out doing a good business hand painting ceramic tiles for a tile store, and moved on to painting abstract art made-to-order for decorators. You can make at least a side income as a painter, if you are willing to paint what sells and not just what you want to paint.
There are many other creative home businesses you could try to start, of course — these are just a few to get the wheels turning in your head. What else can you think of that’s creative and could be done from home?
